SSD & HDD Accessories

Despite the name, SSD & HDD Accessories is mostly about the hardware drives live in: disk shelves and drive arrays such as HP StorageWorks MSA60, D2600 and M6412 units, P2000 drive chassis, and the I/O modules and interposers that connect a shelf's drives to its controllers. These parts belong to a storage family, so the useful search terms are the enclosure or array model on the chassis label and the module's own part number. Some shelves are listed with drives installed; check the listing before assuming it's empty.

Working with disk shelves

  1. Match shelf to host

A SAS JBOD needs a host adapter or RAID controller with external SAS ports; a Fibre Channel shelf needs FC connectivity. The shelf's interface decides the controller, not the drives.

  2. Dual I/O modules

Two I/O modules give two paths to every dual-port SAS drive, so a cable or module failure doesn't take the shelf offline.

  3. Family-specific parts

I/O modules, power supplies and carriers are generally only valid within one enclosure family, even when they look alike.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attach a D2600 shelf to any server?

The D2600 is a 6Gb/s SAS JBOD, so it needs a SAS RAID controller or HBA with external mini-SAS ports in the server. HP qualified specific Smart Array controllers for it.

What does an I/O module do in a disk shelf?

It links the shelf's drives to the host or to the next shelf in a chain. Two modules give redundant paths when the drives are dual-port.
