Buying guide

Choosing a SAS cable

  1. Internal connectors

Older servers use Mini-SAS SFF-8087 connectors inside. HPE Gen9 and later and Dell 13th generation servers use Mini-SAS HD SFF-8643.

  2. External connectors

External SFF-8088 Mini-SAS and SFF-8644 Mini-SAS HD ports aren't interchangeable, so match the cable to both devices.

  3. Routing

Internal cables follow a set path from controller to backplane, and kits named for the server and drive box fit without stretching.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect an SFF-8088 shelf to an SFF-8644 controller?

Yes, with a hybrid cable that has SFF-8644 on one end and SFF-8088 on the other.

How long can a SAS cable be?

Passive copper SAS cables generally run up to about 10 meters at 6Gb/s, and shorter at 12Gb/s. Longer runs need active or optical cables.

Are SAS and SATA drive connectors the same?

They look alike, but a SAS drive's connector has a bridge that stops it plugging into a SATA cable. SATA drives, by contrast, fit SAS connectors.
