Matching SCSI cables

  1. Connector types

External SCSI uses HD68 (high-density 68-pin) or the smaller VHDCI connector. Older devices use 50-pin Centronics or HD50.

  2. Termination

A SCSI chain needs termination at both ends. Most LVD cables and newer devices provide it; older chains need a separate terminator.

  3. LVD, SE and HVD

Mixing LVD and single-ended devices on one bus drops the whole bus to slower single-ended mode, and HVD devices work with neither.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a SCSI cable be?

LVD SCSI allows up to 12 meters for a bus with several devices and 25 meters point to point. Single-ended SCSI is limited to a few meters.

Can I connect a SCSI tape drive to a modern server?

Yes, with a SCSI HBA in a free PCIe slot and the right cable. Many LTO-3 and LTO-4 drives use VHDCI or HD68 connectors.
