SCSI Controllers

SCSI Controllers keeps older servers, tape drives and lab equipment connected: HP Ultra320 LVD host bus adapters like the AH627A, LSI20320 cards, PCI-X combo cards with SCSI and Gigabit Ethernet on one board, Compaq differential adapters, and DEC KZPBA controllers for AlphaServer-era systems. Most of these are bought to keep a working system running, so matching the bus (PCI, PCI-X or PCI Express) and the SCSI signaling type matters more than speed.

Buying guide

Matching a SCSI adapter

  1. Signaling type

Single-ended, LVD and high-voltage differential (HVD) SCSI are separate electrical standards. LVD devices can run on single-ended buses at reduced speed, but HVD doesn't mix with either.

  2. Slot type

PCI-X cards fit PCI-X slots and many 64-bit PCI slots, but never PCI Express. Check the motherboard before picking a card.

  3. Connectors

Internal cables use 68-pin high-density connectors; external devices usually use 68-pin VHDCI. Tape drives often need a specific cable and terminator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect an LVD tape drive to a differential (HVD) SCSI card?

No. HVD uses different signal voltages, and mixing it with LVD or single-ended devices doesn't work and can damage hardware. Use an LVD or Ultra320 adapter.

Will a PCI-X SCSI card fit a PCI Express slot?

No. PCI-X and PCI Express are different slot types. For a newer server, choose a PCIe SCSI adapter such as an Ultra320 PCIe HBA.
