Buying guide

Using IDE cables

  1. 40 or 80 conductors

Ultra ATA/66 and faster need the 80-conductor cable. A 40-conductor cable limits drives to ATA/33.

  2. Connector order

On 80-conductor cables the blue end goes to the motherboard, black to the master drive and gray to the slave.

  3. Jumper settings

Drive jumpers must suit the cable: cable select uses the connector position, otherwise set one drive as master and the other as slave.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect an IDE drive to a SATA-only PC?

With an IDE-to-SATA adapter or a USB-to-IDE adapter, yes. The USB route is the easiest way to recover data from an old drive.

What is a 44-pin IDE cable?

A cable for 2.5-inch laptop drives and slimline optical drives, which carry power through the four extra pins.
