ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and Intel boards cover Socket 478, LGA775, LGA1155, LGA1150 and LGA1151 for Intel and Socket A, 939, AM2+, AM3 and AM3+ for AMD, including nForce, Z77, Z87 and Z97 boards. Dell boards, an Acer netbook board and an HP workstation board tray are listed too. These suit repairs of older PCs and legacy systems.

Buying guide

Buying an older motherboard

  1. Memory generation

Boards from this period take DDR, DDR2 or DDR3. Check the board's memory type and maximum before reusing old modules.

  2. Storage ports

Older boards may have IDE alongside SATA, and early SATA ports run at 1.5 or 3Gb/s. Modern drives still work on them, just slower.

  3. BIOS and CPU support

Later processors on the same socket often need a newer BIOS, which may have to be flashed with an older supported processor installed.

Frequently asked questions

Will Windows 10 or 11 run on these boards?

Windows 11 needs TPM 2.0 and a supported processor, which most of these boards lack. Many LGA1155 and LGA1150 boards run Windows 10, while older boards are best kept on the operating system they shipped with.

What processors fit an LGA775 board?

LGA775 boards take Pentium 4, Pentium D, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors, but the chipset and BIOS limit which. P45 and X48 boards run Core 2 Quads, while older 945-series boards often don't.

Do these boards include an I/O shield?

Only where the title says so, as with the Asus P8H77-I and the Intel Socket 478 board listed with one.
