Choosing a fan
Redundant fan kits
Some servers ship with a minimum fan set and take a redundant kit so cooling continues if one fan fails.
Size, voltage and connector
PC fans are sized in millimeters, such as 80, 92 or 120mm, and rated by voltage. The connector and cable length must suit the board's header.
Bearing type
Ball-bearing fans generally outlast sleeve-bearing fans in hot, always-on systems.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a quieter fan in my server?
Not without risk. Server fans are sized for the airflow the system needs, and the management controller expects specific speeds, so a different fan can trigger errors or overheating.
What do 3-pin and 4-pin fan connectors mean?
3-pin fans report their speed and are controlled by voltage; 4-pin fans add a PWM wire for finer speed control. Most boards run either type.
Why is my LaserJet's fan noisy?
Printer fans wear like any other. Replace a rattling or loud fan before it stops, because the printer shows a fan error and halts when cooling fails.
