Replacing a combined cooler
One assembly
When the fan is built onto the heatsink, a failing fan usually means replacing the whole assembly.
Processor wattage
Some laptops use different assemblies for 25W, 35W and 45W processors; the EliteBook 2540p's 25W assembly is one example.
Dust
Dust packed between the heatsink fins chokes airflow long before the fan itself wears out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace only the fan?
On many laptops the fan is a separate part; on others it's built into the thermal module. Check whether your model's fan is listed on its own in Fans.
How often should a laptop's cooling be cleaned?
Every year or two in dusty places, or whenever the fan runs constantly or the laptop slows under load. Compressed air through the vents helps, but heavy buildup means opening the case.
What thermal material should I use?
The paste or pads the assembly ships with, or a quality non-conductive paste. Laptop GPUs and memory chips often use thermal pads of a set thickness, so match them.
