Buying guide
Fitting a heatsink
Match the processor
Some servers use different heatsinks for higher-wattage processors or for each socket, so check the processor's power rating against the heatsink.
Even pressure
Tighten heatsink screws a little at a time in the order marked on the heatsink, so it seats evenly.
Clean before refitting
Remove old thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol before fitting a new heatsink or reusing an old one.

Frequently asked questions
Does a heatsink come with thermal paste?
Many OEM heatsinks have thermal material already applied. If yours doesn't, or you're refitting an old one, apply a thin layer of fresh paste.
Can I use a desktop heatsink in a server?
No. Server heatsinks are shaped for the chassis airflow and mounting, and rely on the server's fans rather than their own.
Why does my processor run hot after a heatsink swap?
Usually uneven mounting, too much or too little thermal paste, or a protective film left on the base. Check the contact and remount.
