Buying guide
Replacing a server board
Reapply settings
After an OEM board swap, re-enter the serial number and product ID or service tag, then restore the iLO, iDRAC or IMM network settings and license keys.
TPM and encryption
A TPM on the old board holds keys for BitLocker and similar encryption. Have the recovery keys ready before the swap.
Firmware set
A replacement board can arrive with older or newer firmware than the rest of the server. Bring the BIOS, BMC and controller firmware to a matched set afterward.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Supermicro board in an OEM server chassis?
Generally no. HPE, Dell and IBM chassis use proprietary board shapes, power connectors and fan headers. Supermicro boards suit Supermicro and standard server chassis.
What size are dual-socket server boards?
Extended ATX and SSI EEB boards measure about 12 x 13 inches to fit two sockets and more memory slots. They need a case that supports that size and, for EEB, its mounting-hole layout.
What is a BMC?
A baseboard management controller: the chip behind iLO, iDRAC, IMM and Supermicro IPMI that lets you power, monitor and reach the console of a server remotely, independent of the operating system.
