Servers Barebones

Servers Barebones lists server platforms without processors, memory or drives. Supermicro SuperServers make up much of it: 1U LGA3647 systems like the SYS-5019P-MTR and SYS-1029P-MT, the 4U SYS-4029GP-TRT2 GPU server, and multi-node Twin and MicroCloud chassis with up to twelve nodes. HP CTO units cover the ProLiant DL160 Gen9, DL360p and DL380p Gen8 and DL580 G7, plus BL420c, BL460c and BL680c blades. Dell PowerEdge C6300 and C6320 nodes and Lenovo ThinkServer RD430 barebones round it out.

Buying guide

Planning a barebone build

  1. Socket and generation

The socket, whether LGA3647, LGA2011, LGA1366 or LGA1151, fixes which processor generations and memory type the board takes.

  2. GPU servers

GPU barebones like the SYS-4029GP-TRT2 list the cards they support, along with power connectors and airflow. Passive data center GPUs depend on the chassis fans.

  3. Multi-node chassis

In Twin and MicroCloud systems, nodes share power supplies and fans, but each node needs its own processors, memory, drives and network cabling.

Frequently asked questions

What's included with a barebone server?

Typically the chassis, motherboard, power supplies and fans, and sometimes heatsinks and rails. Processors, memory, drives and add-in cards are bought separately, and each listing notes any exceptions.

Can I use desktop processors in a server barebone?

Only if the board supports them. LGA1151 server boards take Xeon E3 or E-2100 processors, depending on the chipset, and some also accept Core i3. LGA3647 boards need Xeon Scalable processors.

How many nodes fit in a MicroCloud chassis?

The SYS-5039MS-H8TRF holds eight nodes and the SYS-5038ML-H12TRF holds twelve. Each node is a separate server sharing the chassis power and cooling.
