Intel Processors

Intel Processors is dominated by Xeon server chips. HPE processor kits cover 1st and 2nd generation Xeon Scalable Platinum, Gold and Silver models such as the 8180, 8280, 6230 and 4114, along with 3rd and 4th generation parts like the Gold 6338, 6342 and 6430. Xeon E5-2600, E7 and E3-1200 processors and Itanium chips serve older servers, and Core i7 and Pentium processors cover desktops and laptops.

Matching a Xeon

  1. Generation and socket

1st and 2nd generation Xeon Scalable processors use LGA3647, 3rd generation uses LGA4189, and 4th and 5th generation use LGA4677. The server's BIOS must also support the generation.

  2. Tier and sockets

Platinum processors scale to eight-socket systems, Gold to four, and Silver and Bronze to two.

  3. Memory speed

The processor sets the top memory speed. In the 2nd generation, Platinum 8200 and Gold 6200 models run memory at 2933, Gold 5200 at 2666 and Silver 4200 at 2400.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move from 1st to 2nd generation Xeon Scalable in the same server?

Usually, since both use LGA3647, but the server needs a BIOS that supports 2nd generation parts. On HPE Gen10 and Dell 14th generation servers, update the system ROM before installing the new processors.

Are Xeon E5 v3 and v4 processors interchangeable?

Both use LGA2011-3, and boards built for v3 usually run v4 processors after a BIOS update. Memory support and power ratings can differ, so check the server's supported list.

Do you list Itanium processors?

Yes, for HP Integrity rx-series and blade servers that still run HP-UX or OpenVMS. Intel ended Itanium shipments in 2021, so existing stock is the remaining source of spares.
