Replacing cooling parts

  1. Airflow direction

Switch fan trays and some server fans come in front-to-back and back-to-front versions. Every fan in a unit, and its power supplies, must move air the same way.

  2. Thermal material

Fit fresh thermal paste or pads whenever a heatsink comes off. Many HP heatsinks ship with thermal material already applied.

  3. Graphics variants

Laptop heatsinks often differ between integrated-graphics and discrete-graphics versions of the same model.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my server running its fans at full speed?

Usually it has detected a problem: a failed fan, a missing blank, a component it doesn't recognize, or a heatsink not seated properly. The management log in iLO or iDRAC shows which.

Can hot-plug fans be replaced while the server runs?

Yes, in servers with hot-plug fan bays like the ProLiant ML570 G3, where redundant fans keep cooling while one is swapped. Fixed fans need the server shut down.

How do I know a laptop fan is failing?

Grinding or clicking noises, a fan that runs flat out all the time, or a laptop that shuts down under load all point to a worn fan or a heatsink clogged with dust.
