CD Drives

CD Drives is mostly legacy CD-ROM hardware: 16x to 32x IDE drives for Compaq Presario and Deskpro PCs, drives made for Armada laptops, and 24x CD-ROMs built for ProLiant servers. These drives keep older systems able to load software, boot recovery media or read archived discs. Many are model-specific, with bezels, brackets or connectors that only suit the computer they were built for.

Buying guide

Replacing an older optical drive

  1. IDE or SATA

Most drives here are IDE (parallel ATA). A SATA-only computer needs a SATA optical drive or an adapter.

  2. Model-specific fit

Laptop and server drives use slim form factors with custom bezels and brackets. Match the part number on the old drive where you can.

  3. Slim or half-height

Desktop drives are half-height 5.25-inch units; laptops and servers use slimline 12.7mm or 9.5mm drives.

Frequently asked questions

Will an IDE CD-ROM drive work in a SATA-only computer?

Not directly. You'd need an IDE-to-SATA adapter or, more simply, a SATA optical drive.

Why is a server CD-ROM drive a different part from a desktop one?

Server drives are slimline units with a bezel, bracket and sometimes a connector made for that chassis, so a desktop drive won't mount in their bay.
