DVD Drives

DVD Drives covers read-only DVD-ROM drives: 16x SATA drives for current desktops, IDE drives for Compaq Presario systems, and slim DVD-ROMs built for ProLiant servers like the DL360 G4 and DL320 G3. A DVD-ROM drive reads DVDs and CDs, which is what most servers need to install an operating system or load firmware from disc. For writing discs, look at the burner category.

Buying guide

Choosing a DVD-ROM drive

  1. Server slim drives

Rack servers use 9.5mm or 12.7mm slim drives with a chassis-specific bezel and bracket. The part number on the old drive is the safest match.

  2. Interface

Newer systems use SATA optical drives; older ones IDE. Check the cable before ordering.

  3. Do you need one at all?

Many newer servers mount install media virtually through iLO or iDRAC, so an internal drive is optional on them.

Frequently asked questions

Does a DVD-ROM drive read CDs?

Yes. DVD-ROM drives read CD-ROM, CD-R and most CD-RW discs as well as DVDs.

Why does my ProLiant need a specific DVD drive part?

ProLiant slim drives carry a bezel, bracket and connector made for that chassis. A generic slim drive may work electrically but won't mount or line up with the faceplate.
