Tray/Caddy

Tray/Caddy holds the carriers that slot drives into hot-swap bays: Dell LFF caddies, EMC 2.5-inch trays, Supermicro hot-swap trays, and HP carriers with SAS-to-Fibre Channel interposer boards for older StorageWorks shelves. A carrier is specific to its chassis family and generation. HP's G7-era trays, for example, don't fit the SmartDrive bays used from Gen8 onward, even though both hold the same 2.5-inch drives.

Buying guide

Getting the right carrier

  1. Identify by part number

Carriers are stamped with a part number on the handle or side rail. That number, or the server and generation, is the reliable way to match one.

  2. LFF versus SFF

3.5-inch and 2.5-inch carriers aren't interchangeable. Some 3.5-inch carriers accept a 2.5-inch drive with an adapter; check before relying on it.

  3. Interposers

Some carriers include a small board that converts the drive's interface, such as SAS or SATA to Fibre Channel. The drive behind it must match that board.

Frequently asked questions

Do new drives come with a tray?

Bare drives don't. OEM drive kits often include the carrier; the listing will say if it's included.

Can I put a 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch tray?

Only with an adapter bracket or a carrier designed for both sizes. A standard 3.5-inch tray won't line the connector up.
