Hard Drive Enclosure

Hard Drive Enclosure brings together the boxes and cages that hold drives: 12Gb/s SAS expansion shelves like HPE's D3610, array-specific expansion enclosures for 3PAR 8000 and Nimble systems, compact JBODs such as QNAP's TL-D800S, and internal drive cages that add bays to servers like the ProLiant DL380 G6. Array expansion shelves only attach to their own array family, while general-purpose JBODs work with any SAS or SATA host adapter that supports external enclosures.

Expansion shelves and cages

  1. Array shelves

3PAR, Nimble and similar expansion enclosures are designed and supported only behind their own controllers; they're not general-purpose JBODs.

  2. Internal drive cages

Adding a cage usually also needs a backplane, cables and enough controller ports or an expander. Check the server's options guide first.

  3. Cabling

External shelves use mini-SAS (SFF-8088) or mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) cables. The two connectors aren't interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 3PAR or Nimble expansion shelf be used as a standalone JBOD?

Not practically. Those shelves are built to sit behind their array controllers and aren't supported elsewhere.

What else do I need to add a drive cage to my server?

Usually a matching backplane and cables, and sometimes an extra controller or SAS expander, depending on how many bays the server already drives.
