PDUs
PDUs covers rack power distribution from basic power strips to managed three-phase units. APC models range from the 1U AP9564 basic strip and AP7801B metered PDU to AP79xx switched and NetShelter three-phase units with C13 and C19 outlets. HPE, Eaton ePDU and IBM DPI front-end PDUs are listed alongside, plus a few Sun power distribution boards and Compaq tape library power assemblies filed here by name.

Choosing a rack PDU
Basic, metered or switched
Basic PDUs just distribute power. Metered units display the load so you don't overload the circuit, and switched units add remote control of each outlet to power-cycle equipment.
Input plug and circuit
The input plug, such as NEMA 5-20P, L5-30P, L6-30P or IEC 309, sets the circuit you need. Under US electrical code a 30A circuit carries at most 24A of continuous load.
Outlet types
Most servers and switches plug into C13 outlets, while high-wattage supplies and blade chassis need C19. Count both before choosing.
Single or three phase
Three-phase PDUs deliver more power per circuit for dense racks by spreading the load across three phases.

Frequently asked questions
Can I daisy-chain PDUs?
Not for power. Plugging one PDU into another goes against electrical codes and manufacturer guidance. Some managed PDUs can share one network connection in a chain, which is a different thing.
Should a PDU be connected to a UPS?
For protected loads, yes: the UPS feeds the PDU, which distributes power in the rack. Make sure the PDU's input plug matches the UPS's output receptacle.
Does a PDU protect against surges?
Most rack PDUs distribute, meter or switch power without suppressing surges. Surge protection comes from a UPS or a dedicated surge protector upstream.
