Buying guide

Choosing an MFP

  1. Document feeder

An automatic document feeder handles multi-page originals, and duplex feeders on higher-end models scan both sides without manual flipping.

  2. PageWide

HP PageWide printers use a fixed printhead as wide as the page, giving inkjet output at laser-like speeds.

  3. Fax line

Built-in fax needs an analog phone line or a VoIP service that supports fax reliably.

Frequently asked questions

What does Flow mean on an HP MFP?

HP's Flow models, like the PageWide Enterprise Color Flow MFP 586z, add a faster document feeder, a pull-out keyboard and features for heavy scanning workflows.

Can an MFP scan to a network folder?

Most business models can, set up through their embedded web server: add an SMB share and its credentials as a scan destination. Scanning to email needs the SMTP server details.

Do inkjet MFPs use ink when idle?

Some ink goes to automatic printhead cleaning, so occasional use costs more per page than steady use. Turning the printer off with its own power button, not at the wall, lets it cap the printheads.
