Formatter Board

Formatter Board covers the main logic boards that run HP printers and MFPs. Listings include formatters for the LaserJet 1022, M4345 and 4345 MFP, M4555 MFP and 9000 MFP, Color LaserJet CP3505, M452, M476, M477 and CM3530, and DesignJet T1100, T2300, Z2100 and Z6100 large-format printers, some with the hard drive installed. The formatter holds the firmware, network interface and settings, so it's the part to check when a printer won't initialize or connect.

Buying guide

Replacing a formatter

  1. Firmware level

A replacement formatter may run older or newer firmware than you expect. Update it to the current release for the printer after installing.

  2. Settings and serial

Network settings and page counts live on the formatter or its storage, and some models need the serial number and configuration re-entered after a swap.

  3. Move the add-ons

Memory, hard drives, JetDirect cards and fax boards on the old formatter usually move across, unless the listing includes them, as the Color LaserJet 9500 MFP formatter's does.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know the formatter has failed?

Common signs are a printer stuck at initializing, a blank or frozen control panel while the engine runs, no network connection, or 49 and 79 service errors that persist after a power cycle.

Will a formatter from a different model work?

Only if it's listed for your printer. Formatters within one family can look alike but carry different firmware and connectors.

Does a DesignJet formatter include the hard drive?

Some listings do, such as the T1100 and Z2100 formatters sold with the drive installed. Otherwise move the old drive across or order one separately.
