Printer Hard Drives

Printer Hard Drives are the internal disks enterprise printers and MFPs use for job storage, fonts, forms and secure printing: drives for LaserJet and Color LaserJet Enterprise models like the M4555 and M775, HP's encrypted High Performance Secure Hard Drives, and DesignJet drives that ship with firmware preloaded. They're specific to the printer family. A kit for one series won't necessarily work in another, and some drives need the printer's firmware image before the printer will boot from them.

Buying guide

Replacing a printer hard drive

  1. Match the printer series

Search by the drive's part number or the printer model. Drive kits differ in connector, mounting and firmware between LaserJet generations.

  2. Encrypted drives

Secure drives protect stored scans and print jobs at rest. A replacement usually has to be initialized from the printer's menus before use.

  3. Legacy EIO drives

Older LaserJets take 2.5-inch IDE drives on an EIO card. They're a different part from the SATA drives in current models.

Frequently asked questions

Will my printer keep stored jobs after a drive replacement?

No. Jobs, fonts and forms stored on the old drive don't transfer, and depending on the model the printer may need its firmware reloaded once the new drive is in.

Do I need an encrypted printer drive?

If the printer stores scanned or printed documents that fall under data-protection rules, an encrypted drive is the safer choice. Many enterprise LaserJets support them as a drop-in option.
