Buying guide

Buying toner

  1. Rated yield

Yield is the page count measured under ISO/IEC 19752 for mono or 19798 for color, at about 5% coverage per page. Real-world yield varies with what you print.

  2. Region

Some HP and Dell cartridges are made for a sales region and may not work in a printer bought elsewhere.

  3. Storage

Keep cartridges sealed in their packaging, at room temperature and out of direct sunlight, until they're needed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy high-yield cartridges?

On busy printers they usually lower the cost per page and mean fewer changes. For a printer that prints little, a standard cartridge avoids paying for toner that sits unused.

Why does my printer reject a new cartridge?

Check that all protective tape and clips are removed and that the cartridge matches the printer model and region. Printer firmware can also block cartridges it doesn't recognize.

What's the difference between toner and a drum?

Toner is the powder; the drum, or imaging unit, transfers it to the paper. HP cartridges usually combine the two, while some Dell and Samsung printers use a separate drum that lasts longer.
