Buying guide

Choosing a scanner

  1. Sheetfed or flatbed

Sheetfed scanners like the fi-7160 move stacks of documents quickly. Flatbeds handle books, photos and fragile originals, and combination models do both.

  2. Daily volume

Document scanners carry a recommended daily page volume. High-volume units like the fi-5950 are built for production scanning.

  3. Drivers

TWAIN and ISIS drivers connect scanners to document management software, so check which type your software uses.

Frequently asked questions

What does duplex mean on a document scanner?

It scans both sides of each page in one pass. Most document scanners, including the fi-7160, do this as standard.

How is ScanSnap different from Fujitsu's fi series?

ScanSnap models are personal and small-office scanners with simple one-button software. fi-series scanners are built for higher volumes and for business capture software.

What resolution do I need?

300 dpi is plenty for text documents and OCR. Photos and artwork benefit from 600 dpi or more, and film needs higher still.
