Buying guide

Choosing a USB cable

  1. Connector types

Printers and scanners use USB Type B, newer devices use USB-C, and internal motherboard USB uses 9- or 10-pin headers.

  2. Length limits

USB 2.0 cables are limited to 5 meters and passive USB 3.x cables to about 3 meters.

  3. Internal server USB

Servers use internal USB ports for boot devices and license dongles, wired with cables made for that model.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my printer connect over a long USB cable?

Past 5 meters, USB 2.0 signals degrade. Use a shorter cable, an active extension or a network connection instead.

What does a server's front USB cable do?

It connects the front-panel USB ports, and on some models the front video port, to the system board. It fits only the server it's listed for.
