Interface adapters
IP and Cat5 KVM switches reach each server through an interface adapter on its USB or PS/2 and VGA ports, plus a standard Cat5 cable.
Virtual media
Virtual media adapters let you mount a DVD or disk image on a server remotely through the KVM.
Switch family
Interface adapters are specific to a KVM switch family, such as HP's adapters for its own and Avocent-based switches.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose USB or PS/2 adapters?
USB for servers from roughly the last fifteen years. PS/2 adapters are for older systems with PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports.
How long can a KVM Cat5 run be?
Typically up to about 30 meters between the switch and the server adapter, depending on the switch. Longer runs need extenders.
