Buying guide

Picking an adapter

  1. Active or passive

Passive DisplayPort adapters rely on the port supporting dual-mode DP++. Ports without it, and some multi-monitor setups, need active adapters.

  2. Direction matters

Most video adapters convert one way, such as a DisplayPort source to an HDMI display, and won't work reversed.

  3. Serial pinouts

Serial cables come straight-through or null-modem. Match the wiring the device expects.

Frequently asked questions

Will a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter carry audio?

Usually, if the source sends audio over DisplayPort. 4K at 60Hz needs an active adapter rated for HDMI 2.0.

Can I use a PS/2 keyboard on a USB-only PC?

With an active PS/2 to USB adapter, yes. Simple passive adapters only work with keyboards and mice built to speak both protocols.

What is a KVM interface adapter?

A dongle that links one server's keyboard, video and mouse ports to a KVM switch over Cat5 cable, like HP's adapter for BladeSystem c-Class.
