Fixing paper feed problems
Which roller does what
The pickup roller grabs the top sheet, and the separation roller or pad holds back the sheets beneath it. Worn separation parts cause multi-feeds; a worn pickup roller causes misfeeds.
Replace in sets
The rollers for one tray wear together, so replacing pickup, feed and separation rollers at the same time avoids a repeat repair.
Clean before replacing
Glazed rollers sometimes recover after wiping with a lint-free cloth and water. Cracked or hardened rubber needs replacing.

Frequently asked questions
How often should printer rollers be replaced?
There's no fixed interval. Most business LaserJets include tray rollers in their maintenance kit, so they're replaced with it; replace them sooner if misfeeds start.
Do all trays use the same rollers?
No. Tray 1, Tray 2 and optional feeders often use different rollers, so order by tray position as well as printer model.
What is a transfer roller?
In a monochrome LaserJet, the transfer roller pulls toner from the drum onto the paper. A worn one causes faint or blotchy printing, and many maintenance kits include it.
