Buying guide

Adding or replacing a tray

  1. Feeder or cassette

A feeder includes the pickup mechanism and connector, while a cassette is just the drawer that slides into it. Order a feeder to add capacity and a cassette to replace a broken drawer.

  2. Stacking limits

Optional 500- and 550-sheet feeders stack under the printer, up to a maximum number that each model specifies.

  3. Driver setting

After adding a feeder, enable it in the printer driver's device settings so computers can select it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a tray from a similar model fit my printer?

Sometimes, within an engine family. The LaserJet Pro M402, M403, M426 and M427, for example, share a Tray 2 cassette. Check the listing's model list.

Why does my printer say a tray is open when it's closed?

A broken tab on the cassette or a worn sensor flag can stop the printer detecting the tray. A new cassette fixes the first; the second needs the sensor checked.

Which tray should I use for envelopes and labels?

Usually the multipurpose tray (Tray 1), which has the straightest paper path. Standard cassettes are meant for plain paper sizes.
