Buying guide

Choosing a dock

  1. Connector type

Proprietary docks such as Dell E-Port, Lenovo Mini Dock and UltraBase, and HP's docking-connector stations fit only laptops with the matching port. USB-C and Thunderbolt docks work across many models.

  2. Charging wattage

A USB-C dock powers the laptop through the cable. If its wattage is below what the laptop's own adapter supplies, the laptop charges slowly or not at all under load.

  3. Power adapter

Some docks ship without their power adapter, such as HP's 90W basic docking station, so check whether one is included.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Thunderbolt dock work on a USB-C laptop?

It depends on the dock. Some, like Dell's TB16, need a Thunderbolt 3 port. Most Thunderbolt 4 docks also work from a plain USB-C port, with fewer displays or less bandwidth.

Does a dock need drivers?

USB-C and Thunderbolt docks mostly use the operating system's built-in drivers, though dock firmware updates are worth applying. DisplayLink-based universal docks such as the D6000 need the DisplayLink driver for their video outputs.

Will a Lenovo dock work with a Dell laptop?

Docks with proprietary connectors won't. USB-C and Thunderbolt docks generally work across brands for ports and displays, but charging rates and features like MAC address pass-through may only work with the dock maker's own laptops.
