Buying guide

Matching a power adapter

  1. Voltage and tip

Dell barrel adapters use 7.4mm, 4.5mm and 3.0mm tips, and the laptop reads the adapter's wattage through the center pin. Voltage and tip both have to match.

  2. Equal or higher wattage

Choose the original wattage or more. A smaller adapter can trigger warnings, charge slowly, or stop charging while the laptop works hard.

  3. USB-C Power Delivery

USB-C adapters negotiate voltage with the laptop, so one adapter can serve several models as long as its wattage is high enough.

  4. Device adapters

Access points, phones and media converters use specific voltages and connectors, so order by the part number for the device.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Dell laptop say the adapter type can't be determined?

The laptop couldn't read the adapter's ID signal, often because of a damaged cable or tip, or a non-Dell adapter. It may refuse to charge or slow the processor until a recognized adapter is connected.

Can I use a 65W USB-C charger on a laptop that came with 45W?

Yes. A USB-C laptop draws only what it needs, so a higher-wattage USB-C PD charger is safe and may charge faster. The reverse can mean slow charging.

What is a multi-slot battery charger for?

It charges spare batteries for handheld computers and scanners, such as Zebra TC51 or Honeywell devices, so workers can swap in a fresh battery mid-shift instead of docking the device.
