Buying guide

Choosing a laptop battery

  1. Voltage must match

The replacement's voltage has to match the original. Capacity, in Wh or mAh, can be higher for longer runtime.

  2. Cell count

More cells give longer runtime at the cost of weight, and 9-cell Latitude batteries stick out past the back of the case.

  3. Internal batteries

Many newer laptops, like the XPS 13 9360, use internal batteries that are reached by removing the bottom cover.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my laptop say the battery isn't recognized?

Dell and HP laptops read a chip in the battery to confirm it's compatible. A battery for a different model, or one with a failed chip, may not charge and can trigger a warning.

How long do laptop batteries last?

Lithium-ion batteries typically keep most of their capacity for a few hundred full charge cycles, then decline. Heat, and sitting at 100% charge all the time, wear them faster.

How should I store a spare battery?

At around 40 to 50 percent charge in a cool, dry place, topped up every few months. A battery left fully drained for a long time may not recover.
