Buying guide

Choosing a monitor

  1. Panel type

IPS panels give wider viewing angles and more accurate color, TN panels respond fastest, and VA panels offer the deepest contrast.

  2. Inputs

Match the monitor's inputs, whether DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, VGA or USB-C, to the computer's outputs. VGA- and DVI-only monitors may need adapters on current PCs.

  3. Ergonomics

For all-day use, look for a height-adjustable stand or VESA mounting holes. Many budget models only tilt.

Frequently asked questions

What does the contrast ratio on a monitor listing mean?

Static contrast is the real ratio between the brightest white and darkest black, typically around 1,000:1 for IPS and 3,000:1 for VA panels. Figures in the millions are dynamic contrast, which isn't comparable between brands.

Can I connect two monitors to my PC?

Most graphics cards and many laptops drive at least two displays. Count the video outputs, and use DisplayPort daisy-chaining or a dock where it's supported.

What is a portable monitor?

A thin, light screen like the Asus MB16AHP that connects to a laptop's USB-C port, giving you a second display on the road.
