Fibre Channel Controllers

Fibre Channel Controllers holds the host bus adapters that connect servers to a SAN: HPE StoreFabric SN1100E 16Gb cards, StorageWorks 4Gb adapters like the AB378A and AB378B, and 2Gb PCI-X cards for older ProLiant and Integrity servers. Single- and dual-port versions exist for most generations. Fibre Channel generations interoperate a couple of steps apart, so a newer HBA can usually join an older fabric at the fabric's speed.

Fibre Channel HBA basics

  1. Speed compatibility

FC links negotiate down: a 16Gb HBA runs at 8Gb or 4Gb, and a 32Gb HBA at 16Gb or 8Gb, provided the optics support the lower speed.

  2. Emulex or QLogic

HPE StoreFabric names end in E for Emulex-based cards and Q for QLogic-based ones. They use different drivers and management tools.

  3. Optics included?

Many HBAs ship with shortwave SFP or SFP+ optics installed; some don't. The listing title usually says.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 16Gb Fibre Channel HBA work with my 8Gb switch?

Yes. The link negotiates to 8Gb as long as the SFP+ optics in both ends support it.

What do the E and Q in HPE StoreFabric HBA names mean?

E marks an Emulex-based adapter and Q a QLogic-based one. Pick the one that matches the drivers and tools already in use on your servers.

Is a host bus adapter the same as an FC switch?

No. The HBA goes in the server; switches build the fabric that connects HBAs to storage. Small setups sometimes connect an HBA directly to an array port.
