Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber Optic Cables covers patch cables for storage and network links: HP and Lenovo LC-LC multimode cables from 1m to 50m in OM3 and OM4, LC-SC and SC-SC cables for older equipment, APC duplex LC patch cords, and InfiniBand FDR and QDR active optical cables from HP, Lenovo and Mellanox. A few direct attach copper cables are filed here too.

Buying guide

Choosing fiber patch cables

  1. Multimode grades

OM3 and OM4 multimode fiber, usually aqua, carries 10Gb up to about 300 and 400 meters. Older orange OM1 and OM2 cable reaches much less.

  2. Connectors

LC is standard on SFP and SFP+ optics. SC still appears on older switches, patch panels and media converters.

  3. Single-mode or multimode

Yellow single-mode cable pairs with LR optics and multimode with SR optics. The two don't mix on one link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use OM3 cable with OM4-rated optics?

Yes. Both use the same 50-micron core and connectors; OM3 simply supports a shorter maximum distance at higher speeds.

Do fiber connectors need cleaning?

Yes. Dust on a connector end face is a leading cause of link errors, so keep dust caps on and clean connectors with a fiber cleaning tool before plugging in.

What is a Fibre Channel cable?

The same multimode LC-LC fiber used for Ethernet, sold for SAN use. HP lists these as Fibre Channel cables for connecting HBAs, switches and storage.
