Storage Controllers

Storage Controllers ranges from server-level RAID cards to whole array controllers: HPE's Gen11 SR932i-p 32-lane tri-mode controller, MR216i-a modular controllers, 3PAR StoreServ 7400 and 7440c node controllers, Moonshot 1500 chassis controllers, and the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor that protects controller cache. Array node controllers only work inside their own storage system and carry its firmware, while the server cards follow the slot and backplane rules of the ProLiant generation they were built for.

Buying guide

Server controller or array controller?

  1. Server RAID controllers

Cards like the SR932i-p drive the disks inside a ProLiant. They're matched to the server generation, slot and backplane.

  2. Array node controllers

3PAR and similar node controllers are the brains of a storage array. They're replaced as a matching node type, using the array's own service procedure.

  3. Cache protection

HPE controllers protect their cache with either the Smart Storage Battery or the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor. Which one a server takes is listed in its QuickSpecs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor?

An HPE module that keeps a controller's flash-backed write cache safe through a power loss, much like the Smart Storage Battery but using a capacitor. Supported servers list it as an option.

Can a 3PAR node controller go into a different array model?

No. Node controllers are specific to their StoreServ model and must match the node type already in the array.
