Router Modules

Router Modules covers the interface cards that add WAN, voice and LAN ports to modular routers from Cisco, HP and Juniper, along with secure-access appliances filed next to them: Juniper SA2500 and SA4500 SSL VPN appliances, HP SA3450 VPN servers and Cisco's RV340 dual-WAN VPN router. A router module only fits its own router family's slot type, so start from the router model.

Router modules and VPN appliances

  1. Slot types

Cisco ISR G2 routers take EHWIC and HWIC modules, ISR 4000 routers take NIMs, and HPE MSR routers take SIC and HMIM modules. They're not interchangeable.

  2. Software support

Some modules need a feature set or software release on the router before they work.

  3. SSL VPN appliances

Appliances like the Juniper SA series give remote users browser-based access. They need current software for internet-facing use.
