Switch Module

Switch Module holds the cards that go inside modular switches and storage systems: HPE FlexFabric 12900 fabric modules, 3Com 10-Gigabit XFP expansion modules and encryption accelerators, and I/O modules for EMC VNX arrays. Each module only works in the chassis family it was built for, and usually needs a minimum software version on that chassis. Some optics are also filed here, so check whether a listing is a module or a transceiver.

Buying guide

Buying chassis modules

  1. Chassis family

Modules are specific to a chassis family and sometimes to a slot type. A 12900-series fabric module won't fit another FlexFabric chassis.

  2. Software support

Check that your chassis software version supports the module. Newer modules often need an upgrade before they'll come up.

  3. Power and cooling

Adding line cards raises power draw. Confirm the chassis power supplies can carry the full load with redundancy.

Frequently asked questions

What does a fabric module do in a chassis switch?

It carries traffic between line cards inside the chassis. The number and type of fabric modules set how much bandwidth each slot gets.

Are expansion modules hot-swappable?

Many modular switches support hot-swapping line cards and expansion modules, but the switch documentation is the final word for each model.
