Routers

Routers covers routing hardware from HPE FlexNetwork HSR6602 and MSR branch routers to Juniper, Brocade and Ubiquiti models and small TP-Link Archer and travel routers. A few older HP StorageWorks modular data routers are filed here too; those bridge SCSI devices onto Fibre Channel SANs rather than route IP traffic. For enterprise routers, the interface modules and software license often matter as much as the chassis itself.

Buying guide

Choosing a router

  1. WAN interfaces

Decide how the router connects: Ethernet handoff, fiber, or legacy serial and T1/E1 modules on branch routers.

  2. Throughput with services

VPN, NAT and firewall features lower forwarding throughput. Compare figures with the services you'll run turned on.

  3. Modular branch routers

Routers like the HPE MSR series take interface modules for extra ports, voice or 4G, which are bought separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HP modular data router?

A StorageWorks device that connects SCSI tape drives and libraries to a Fibre Channel SAN. It doesn't route IP traffic, despite the name.

Do I need a router if I have a firewall?

Many firewalls route as well, which covers small sites. Larger networks often keep separate routers for WAN links and dynamic routing.
