Power Over Ethernet Adapters

Power Over Ethernet Adapters covers injectors that add power to an Ethernet cable: HPE 15.4W 802.3af injectors for Aruba Instant On access points, 30W Smart Rate injectors for the AP-303, single-port Aruba injectors, StarTech PoE+ wall-mount units, and Black Box's 8-port 802.3at midspan. An injector lets you power a phone, camera or access point from a switch that has no PoE.

Buying guide

Sizing a PoE injector

  1. Standard and wattage

802.3af supplies up to 15.4W per port, 802.3at (PoE+) up to 30W, and 802.3bt more. Match or exceed what the device draws.

  2. Data speed

Gigabit injectors pass full gigabit data. Multi-gigabit access points need an injector rated for their speed, like Smart Rate models.

  3. Single or multi-port

Single-port injectors suit one device; multi-port midspans power several devices from one unit in a rack.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a PoE+ injector with an 802.3af device?

Yes. A standards-based PoE+ injector supplies only what the device requests, so 802.3af devices run normally.

Do I need a PoE injector if my switch has PoE?

Only if the switch can't supply enough power, either per port or across its total budget, for the device you're adding.
