Buying guide

Choosing an operating system license

  1. Support dates

Windows 7 support ended in January 2020 and Windows 10 in October 2025. Extended support for Windows Server 2016 runs to January 2027 and for Server 2019 to January 2029.

  2. Essentials limits

Windows Server Essentials suits small businesses: one server with up to two processors, 25 users and 50 devices, with no CALs needed.

  3. 32-bit or 64-bit

64-bit editions can use more than 4GB of memory. Choose 32-bit only for old hardware or software that requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Windows 10 still be used?

It runs, but Microsoft ended free security updates in October 2025. Organizations can buy Extended Security Updates for a limited time or move eligible PCs to Windows 11.

Does an OEM Windows Server license include CALs?

Not usually. Standard OEM licenses cover the server's cores, and CALs are bought separately, though some bundles, like the 16-core license with 10 CALs, include them.

What is Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform?

An older RHEL subscription tier that added clustering, cluster storage and unlimited virtual guests to the base server edition. HP sold it for ProLiant servers.
