Buying guide

Buying software licenses

  1. License type

OEM, retail, volume and subscription licenses carry different rights to transfer, reinstall and downgrade, so check which one a listing is.

  2. Tied to hardware

Management licenses like iDRAC Enterprise and iLO Advanced, and Fortinet subscriptions, are tied to one server or appliance, usually by serial number or service tag.

  3. Support lifecycle

Check a product's end-of-support date before buying an older version. After that date it no longer receives security updates.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between OEM and retail Microsoft licenses?

OEM licenses are meant to be preinstalled on a new computer and stay with that first device. Retail licenses can move to another computer once removed from the old one.

Do I need CALs for Windows Server?

Windows Server Standard and Datacenter need a Client Access License for each user or device that connects, on top of the server's core licenses. Essentials editions include access for a limited number of users instead.

Can I move an iLO or iDRAC license to another server?

Plan one license per server. Dell's digital iDRAC licenses are bound to the server's service tag, and HPE sells iLO Advanced as a per-server license.
