Buying guide

Choosing a mouse

  1. Size and grip

Full-size mice suit all-day desk work and compact travel mice fit a laptop bag. Kensington's Pro Fit mid-size models sit between the two.

  2. Optical or laser

Optical sensors suit most desks, while laser sensors track on more surfaces, including glossy ones.

  3. DPI

Higher DPI moves the pointer farther per inch of hand movement, which helps on large or high-resolution screens.

Frequently asked questions

Does a wireless mouse need drivers?

No. Standard 2.4GHz and Bluetooth mice use the operating system's built-in drivers; extra software only adds button customization.

Why does my wireless mouse lag?

Usually a weak battery, interference from nearby USB 3.0 ports or Wi-Fi, or distance from the receiver. Moving the receiver to a front port or an extension cable often helps.

Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz receiver?

Bluetooth needs no dongle and pairs with tablets too. A 2.4GHz receiver connects instantly and works in the BIOS before the operating system loads.
