Description
The Samsung SW-240, identified by the speed rating 40X/12X/40, is an internal CD-Rewritable (CD-RW) drive designed for installation into a standard 5.25-inch drive bay within a desktop computer. This drive utilizes the Parallel ATA (PATA), commonly known as IDE, interface for data transfer, which was the prevalent standard for optical drives and hard drives in personal computers during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The drive allows users to perform multiple functions related to optical media: reading data from standard Compact Discs (CD-ROMs) at up to 40 times the normal speed, writing data to write-once CD-R discs at up to 12 times the normal speed, and rewriting data to CD-RW discs at up to 40 times the normal speed. The speed ratings are crucial specifications for optical drives. The first number (40x) indicates the maximum speed for rewriting data onto a CD-RW disc. The second number (12x) denotes the maximum speed for writing data onto a CD-R disc. The third number (40x) represents the maximum speed for reading data from a CD-ROM disc. These speeds were considered quite fast for their time, enabling relatively quick creation of data CDs, audio CDs, and backups. The drive employs a tray-loading mechanism, where a motorized tray extends from the front of the drive to accept the optical disc. To function, the Samsung SW-240 requires a PATA/IDE ribbon cable to connect to the computer's motherboard and a 4-pin Molex power connector from the system's power supply unit. It also requires appropriate software for burning discs, although most operating systems have built-in support for basic CD burning functions. This drive was a common component in many PC builds, offering users the flexibility to create their own optical media for software distribution, data archiving, or multimedia projects before the widespread adoption of DVD and Blu-ray, and later, flash storage.
