Description

The HP JC877A NX-IPS (Network Intrusion Prevention System) module is a specialized network device designed to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of inline network security and monitoring appliances. It functions as a 4-segment Gigabit bypass switch, meaning it can intelligently manage network traffic flow through up to four distinct segments. The primary purpose is to provide a mechanism for network traffic to be directed to security or analysis tools (like Intrusion Detection Systems, firewalls, or packet capture devices) without creating a single point of failure in the network path. In its normal operation, the module passes traffic transparently between network ports. When a connected inline appliance needs to be taken offline for maintenance, rebooting, or if it fails, the bypass switch can automatically reroute the traffic to bypass the appliance. This 'fail-open' or 'fail-closed' capability (depending on configuration) ensures that the network remains operational and data continues to flow, preventing network outages.
