The Alcatel-Lucent OAW-GBIC-T is a Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) module specifically designed for copper-based Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) connections. Unlike many GBIC modules that are optical, this 'T' variant signifies a twisted-pair copper interface, utilizing the standard RJ-45 connector. It enables network devices equipped with a GBIC slot to connect to the network over standard Ethernet copper cabling. This transceiver module supports data transmission at a rate of 1 Gigabit per second over distances of up to 100 meters. This makes it suitable for connecting network devices within a wiring closet, between adjacent racks in a data center, or for desktop connections where Gigabit Ethernet speeds are required over copper infrastructure. The RJ-45 connector ensures compatibility with common Cat5e, Cat6, or higher category Ethernet cables. The GBIC form factor is an older standard compared to SFP, but it served the same purpose of providing modular network interfaces.
