Modems

Modems is largely legacy dial-up and DSL hardware: HP and Zoom 56Kb/s PCI modem cards, data/fax modems for Deskpro workstations and rp5000 servers, Compaq PC Card fax modems, and DSL modem cards. Some organizations still depend on analog lines for fax servers, alarm panels and out-of-band management, which is why these cards are still bought for systems that can't be replaced.

Where modems still matter

  1. Fax and alarm lines

Fax servers and alarm or elevator panels often dial out over analog lines and need a compatible modem.

  2. Out-of-band access

A modem on a console server or router gives a path in when the network is down.

  3. Soft versus hardware modems

Soft modems rely on the host CPU and specific drivers; hardware modems handle signaling themselves and are easier to support on older operating systems.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 56K modem work over a VoIP phone line?

Often poorly. Compression on VoIP lines distorts modem signals, so fax and data modems work best on a true analog line.

Do PCI modem cards work in PCI Express slots?

No. A PCI card needs a PCI slot. Newer systems need a PCIe or USB modem.
