Memory Cards

Memory Cards covers SD, microSD, CompactFlash and CFast cards in capacities up to 1TB: SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro, Samsung Pro Endurance, Kingston Canvas and similar lines. The right card depends on what's writing to it. Dash cams and security cameras need high-endurance cards built for continuous recording, 4K video cameras need V30 or faster ratings, and industrial and embedded systems often still depend on CompactFlash.

Buying guide

Choosing a memory card

  1. Speed markings

Class 10 and U1 guarantee 10MB/s sustained writes; U3 and V30 guarantee 30MB/s, the usual floor for 4K video. Read speeds on the label are maximums, not minimums.

  2. SDHC versus SDXC

SDHC cards go up to 32GB; SDXC starts above that and uses the exFAT file system. Older devices that only support SDHC won't read an SDXC card.

  3. High-endurance cards

Cards like Samsung's Pro Endurance are built for constant rewriting in cameras and dash cams, where standard cards wear out early.

Frequently asked questions

Will an SDXC card work in an older camera?

Only if the device supports SDXC. Devices limited to SDHC top out at 32GB cards and won't read larger ones.

Is CFast the same as CompactFlash?

No. They're the same size, but CFast uses a SATA-based interface and a different connector, so the cards aren't interchangeable.
