Product Description
The Dell PERC5I (PowerEdge RAID Controller 5 Integrated) is a dedicated hardware RAID controller card that enhances the storage capabilities of compatible Dell PowerEdge servers. It provides robust data protection and performance improvements by allowing administrators to configure multiple hard drives into logical arrays, known as RAID groups. This controller supports essential RAID levels, including RAID 0 for striping data across drives to boost performance, RAID 1 for mirroring data for redundancy, RAID 5 for striping with parity for a balance of performance and protection, and RAID 10 for a combination of mirroring and striping for high performance and redundancy. Utilizing a PCI-Express interface, the PERC5I offers high-speed communication with the server's motherboard, ensuring efficient data transfer between the drives and the system's memory. It is designed to work seamlessly with both SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and SATA (Serial ATA) drives, offering flexibility in storage choices. The controller typically includes onboard cache memory to further accelerate read and write operations, reducing the burden on the CPU and improving overall system responsiveness. For critical applications where data loss due to power failure during write operations is a concern, the PERC5I supports a Battery Backup Unit (BBU). While the BBU is often sold separately, it provides essential power to the controller's cache memory in the event of an unexpected power outage, allowing cached data to be written safely to non-volatile memory. This feature is vital for maintaining data integrity in demanding server environments.
