Tape Media

Tape Media covers the cartridges themselves: HPE LTO-7 and LTO-8 Ultrium data cartridges, LTO-8 WORM tapes with custom labels, older Ultrium-2 media, and DLT and DAT tapes for legacy drives. Each cartridge belongs to one generation and only works in drives that support it. A few listings here are library expansion modules or drives filed alongside the media, so check the title before ordering.

Buying guide

Buying tape media

  1. Match the drive

A cartridge works in drives of its own generation and in the newer drives that support it. LTO-9 drives, for example, take LTO-8 and LTO-9 tapes.

  2. WORM for compliance

Write-once WORM cartridges can't be erased or overwritten, which suits regulatory retention. Use standard cartridges for rotating backups.

  3. Cleaning cartridges

Drives need a cleaning cartridge occasionally; universal LTO cleaners work across Ultrium generations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use LTO-8 tapes in an LTO-9 drive?

Yes. LTO-9 drives read and write LTO-8 cartridges as well as their own.

What does WORM mean on a tape cartridge?

Write once, read many. Data on a WORM cartridge can be added to but not changed or erased, which is why it's used for compliance archives.
