Antennas

Antennas covers outdoor and point-to-point radio: Ubiquiti airMAX sector antennas in 2.4GHz and 5GHz, RocketDish 34dBi bridge dishes, and HPE omni-directional outdoor antennas like the 8dBi 5GHz J9720A for Aruba access points. The right antenna depends on the shape of the coverage you need. Omni antennas cover all around, sectors cover a wedge, and dishes push a narrow beam to a single far point.

Buying guide

Choosing an antenna

  1. Pattern

Omni antennas cover 360 degrees at short range, sectors cover 60 to 120 degrees for base stations, and dishes concentrate signal for long point-to-point links.

  2. Gain and band

Higher dBi gain reaches farther in a narrower beam. The antenna's band, 2.4GHz or 5GHz, must match the radio.

  3. Connectors and mounting

Check the connector type (N-type, RP-SMA) and that the antenna fits the radio's mount, such as Ubiquiti's Rocket mounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a higher-gain antenna to boost my Wi-Fi range?

Within legal limits, yes, but gain narrows the beam rather than adding power. Local radio regulations cap the effective radiated power.

Do outdoor antennas need lightning protection?

Yes. Ground the mast and add a lightning arrester on the cable between the antenna and the radio.
